Reprint of an original amateur period photo of the famous Appleton Special hill climb car.The event is Dancer's End Hillclimb on Sept 4 1938 and the driver is the car's builder John Appleton himself.

The car was a Maserati chassis fitted with a very highly tuned supercharged Riley engine that emitted a piercing shriek at high revs. Unlike many "Shelsley Specials" of the era it featured a very smartly made monoposto body and really looked like a small Grand Prix car of the era. I believe it has since been "restored" to being a Maserati.

Dancer's End was a small hillclimb featuring a loose surface as you can see here. It, like many other small venues of the late 30s, didn't reappear after WW2 .
