Remarkable story of how a British Admiralty official presided over a whole generation of state-sponsored exploration, mostly of the Arctic, in search of the fabled NORTH WEST PASSAGE and to a lesser degree in Africa trying to prove the source and connections of the River Niger. The commanders charged with the colder exploits included James Ross, and John Ross, William Parry and the ill-fated (and feted) Sir John Franklin who's entire expedition , aboard the ships EREBUS and TERROR vanished in the wilds of northern Canada in the mid 1800s . As the titles says "lunacy" !  Well read paperback 488 pages. Curling cover corners and general handling marks. A rattling good story however!
