Superb book by a really gifted writer who traveled along with the Bluebird crew to Lake Eyre in Australia in the quest for a new Land Speed Record.
The team leader and the car's driver, Donald Campbell had survived a 350mph crash a few years before and it, and the pressure of having so much invested in the effort by so many sponsors, took it's toll on him. Press criticism , bad weather and the very remote location of the dry lake on which the record was being attempted all combined to make this attempt grueling in every respect.
Pearson brilliantly gets under the skin of the whole effort, sees it from the inside as well as with the sometimes critical eye of a journalist sent off on what might be a wild goose chase.
Wonderful book. Probably the best written in period on a mercurial and heroic character who seemed to be from an earlier and more dashing age.

Fine condition book. There is an area on the jacket where maybe some tape has been peeled away and taken the top layer of print with it (see the white area down the imnage of Campbell himself) otherwise a fine jacket
