Controversial examination of the background , cause and effect of the huge accident at Le Mans in the 1955 24 hours race in which a Mercedes crashed into the crowd and killed it's driver and around 80 others on motor racing's worst crash. It very nearly got the whole sport banned, saw it's end in Switzerland and the closure of numerous venues that were suddenly cnsidered unsafe. The narrative is based on the eye witness testimony of Austin Healey driver Lance Macklin who's car the Mercedes bounced off on it's tragic flight over the barriers. Unsurprisingly Macklin uses this to excuse himself of the blame and shift it firmly onto Jaguar driver Mike Hawthorn whom he swerved to avoid as he pitted.  Hawthorn and the Mercedes driver Levegh were no longer alive to confirm or deny this view  but  official investigations have repeatedly cleared Hawthorn of prime responsibility in what was clearly a freak chain-reaction in 'perfect storm' conditions .y. One might say fate played a hand. 158 pages, published 1976, . good condition, faded spine, no jacket.
