Reprinted from an original period photo of the legendary  speed king Malcolm Campbell at speed in his Delage straight 8 Grand Prix car at Brooklands in England in 1928 during the Junior Grand Prix event on the moutain circuit.

In this event he was required to carry a riding mechanic but the car was built with such a small amout of space left over for the mechanics seat that future BRM and ERA man Rivers-Fletcher, then a schoolboy, was the only person who was small enough to fit ! The car won and the experience was recalled many years later in Rivers-Fletcher's book MOSTLY MOTOR RACING

In this photo the car is being chased by the Bugatti T35 of G E T Eyston, like Campbell a holder of the land speed record (1937-38 in THUNDERBOLT) who finished 2nd

Delage's exotic straight 8 cars with their vastly expensive engines running ball-bearing cranks and high pressure surpercharging dominated the 1926-7 seasons at huge cost to the company (eventually helping it go bust!) and were raced with success by privateers like Richard Seaman, B Bira, Earl Howe and  Tony Rolt right into the mid 1950s. In fact one car took part in the 1950 British GP ! At that point it was 23 years old...
