Atmospheric shot of Ron Flockhart's ERA R1A at full speed in the 1952 Ulster Trophy Formula 1 event held at Dundrod near Belfast, scene of the 1950-55 RAC TT races and also the Ulster motorcycle GP.
Flockhart raced and hillclimbed the old ERA R1A (the 1934 prototype) in 52-3 to such effect that he became a works driver for the BRM Grand prix team . In the Ulster race depicted here he ran out of fuel and failed to finish. The race was won by Piero Taruffi in the famous Thinwall Special Ferrari 375 V12 and Mike Hawthorn's rapid F2 Cooper Bristol.
Other entries that day included Moss and Fangio in BRM V16s and Louis Rosier in the Ferrari 375 that had momentously won the British GP in 1951 friven by Gonzalez..
Dundrod was a pure road circuit, as you can see, boasting trees, banks, ditches, walls, and blind crests. It was a fearsome circuit and cars ceased to use it after the 1955 TT when several people dies in a spate of accidents.
