Nice shot of the huge 4.5 litre V12 Ferrari 375 Thinwall Special owned and entered by future Vanwall boss Tony Vandervell and driver here by Italian veteran (and 1950 world champion) Nino Farina at Charterhall in Scotland on May 23 1953, in the Daily Record Trophy race. It won, beating the BRM V16 opf Ken Wharton in the process. The car was based on the 1951 F1 car, modified a bit and entered as Thinwall Special as a not very subtle commercial venture to publicize the Vandervall Thinwall bearings that even Ferrari used at the time. Vandervall had been one of the BRM team backers early on and fell out with the management over the way the team was run (it was a national joke at the time).
The car was raced widely by several top names including Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins before Vandervel
l built the first Vanwall Grand Prix car in 1955.Nice shot printed up from an original 35mm negative held in our archives. It does show some scratches from the negative, as you can see bellow but it's a great shot of a very impressive looking car, artfully back-lit by the low sun.
