Lovely action shot of the legendary French racing driver Jean Behra at speed in his tiny F1 Gordini at Avus in 1954, during the Berlin GP. The entry for this event was rather sparce apart from the three factory Mercedes W154 streamliners which finished 1-2-3 with Fnagio gaining a fastest lap at over 137mph!
In this shot Behra is taking the steeply banked North Curve, a terrifying corner where he would sadly perish in 1959, crashing his Porsche over the top and being thrown into a flag pole. In the 1854 event he was the fasts non mercedes but retired with engine failure early on - Gordini's were not noted for their reliability.
