1964 world F1champion and 1966 Can Am cup winner John Surtees at speed in the 1966 Guards Trophy race at Brands Hatch for Group 7 ( Can-Am) cars. Maybe not the best picture but unusual shot of a great driver and a great car more normally seen in the USA.
Surtees was the king of late 1950s motorcycle racing, many times world champion many times Isle of Man TT winner before turning to cars racing in 1961.
He raced in Formula one for Lola in 1962, joined the Ferrari team in 1963 and was world champion for them in 1964. In late 1965 he suffered a massive accident at Mosport in Canada and badly broken his legs and pelvis but recovered to be instantly competitive again in the 1966 season winning the Belgian GP before a famous bust up with the Ferrari team manager at Le Mans (the claim that he was not yet strong enough after his accident was used to excuse some curious political decisions at Ferrari which got up Surtees nose) He joined Cooper mid way through the year and won in Mexico for the team then joined Honda in 1967 and won the Italian GP by a hair's breadth. But Honda pulled out of F1 in 1968 so he endured an unhappy spell at BRM before setting up Team Surtees for whom he was lead driver until he retired in 1971. Aside from F1 he was a great sportscar driver and won the 1966 Can Am series in the USA, drove for Ferrari at Le Mans, Chaparral in Can Am in 1969 and was an ace in Formula 2 events which tended to include all the top F1 drivers in those days in the entry lists.
