Rare photo availabale in two sizes, of Stephen South in the McLaren M29 during qualifying for the 1980 Long Beach GP.
South go the drive at the last moment when Alain Prost broke his wrist and was unable to drive. Unfortunately this put his at odds with the Toleman Team in F2 for whom he had signed for the 1980s season. They fired him and hired Brian Henton instead - he went on to win the F2 title while South, a very talented driver in F3 and F2 failed to qualify at Long Beach and didn't get another run fo McLaren. Instead he drove in Paul Newman's Can Am team, only to crash badly later in the season. The accident led to the loss of a leg and the end of his career.
