West Coast 4-6-0s at Work, the start of Ian Allen's new large format railway series, is the first to cover pre-Grouping classes of locomotives. Concentrating 4-6-0 designs of the London & North Western, Lancashire 7 Yorkshire, Caledonian railways, it captures the atmosphere of the West Coast lines during the heyday of steam. An era of outstanding natural beauty, the West Coast's routes were particularly demanding for steam traction, and the way that the pre-Grouping companies came to terms with their special operational needs and requirements makes fascinating reading. That they were successful evinced  by the evolution of the 1906 LNWR 'Claughton' design into the LMS  'Patriot' class of the 1930s - a class that North-Western steam enthusiasts remember with the considerable nostalgia. Over 200 photographs and line drawings complement an instructive text written by an expert- C. P. Atkins works at the National Railway Museum. West Coast 4-6-0s at work gives detailed coverage of its subject, of interest to all enthusiasts. Very good condition with wear on the top of jacket and minor repairs.
